About the assignment

Art and Literature Integrative Unit on Symbolism
To prepare for your final project, you are required to keep a blog to document the various learning stages. Please follow the proposed learning schedule during the June holidays. You are required to work on them in your assigned pairs.

Stage 1: Explain
Choose a topic/subject matter and justify the topic you have chosen.

You will need to provide a 150-200 words account to justify what aspect about modern living you wish to focus on.
You should discuss with your partner on what appeals to both of you and decide on the approach.

1 June 2013 to 8 June 2013

Stage 2: Interpret
Make subjects personal or accessible through images, anecdotes, analogies, and models.

(i)Upload pictures and articles that are a source of inspiration for you from websites on your blog. Remember to cite the source of these articles and pictures so that there is no infringement of copyright. 
(ii) Provide a sketch of your art work and an outline of the poem.
You will need to provide a historical or personal dimension to ideas and events. Think out of the box, consider different ways to make meaning.

Stage 3: Apply
Adapt what you know in diverse contexts. Show how the historical events, personal experiences can translate the topic into an art form or a Literature poem.



Start on your project. Choose an art form that both of you are confident in doing, to convey the message. This message will also need to be conveyed in your free verse poem.
*You can choose to start on either the art work or the poem first.

Stage 4: Have perspective and Empathize
Have self-knowledge:
Perceive the personal style, prejudices, and habits of mind that both shape and impede our own understanding. Develop awareness of what they do not understand and why understanding is so hard.

By referring to your friend’s blog, please write an entry on your blog and comment on the following:
(i)            your friend’s choice of art form and the approach used
(ii)          choice of topic conveyed in the free verse poem
(iii)          Did you  value in what others might find odd, alien, or implausible?
(iv)         Is there any hidden meaning behind certain things?

23 June 2013 to 29 June 2013
Stage 5: Self-Awareness
Comment on one another’s blog posts and see if there is value in what they have chosen to focus on in their art work and poem.

Individual Task(to be uploaded on your Blog) : Write a 150 to 200 word reflection on your experiences of going through the Art and Literature Integrative Learning Unit. Your reflection must address the following:
(i)            what was an important discovery you made about symbolism?
(ii)          what was useful about conveying meaning through the use of symbols?
(iii)         How was your art work or poem able to shed meaning and insight on the topic you have chosen?
(iv)         Choose another art work or poem that you found inspiring and informative with regards to the topic on modern living.
